Sounds a bit complicated. Why not using TeX? \def\striprevision$Revision #1${#1} \striprevision$Revision$ should produce 1.2.3.4 if something (e.g. RCS) replaces '$Revision$' by '$Revision 1.2.3.4$. Andre'
