If on Lyx 1.3.4 then Layout>>Document>>Bibliography check use Natbib

When you now insert a citation you have multiple chioces as to how it is shown.

If version less than 1.3.x then add to preamble
\usepackage{natbib}
and find the documentation for the package here:
