Probably in a subdirectory of /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex or /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex, but before doing anything rash, wander over to http://www.tug.org/tds and learn about the TeX directory structure. Then have a look at the UK TeX FAQ, http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html, especially the section on installing new packages (and the importance of running "texhash"). See also the comp.text.tex FAQ: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/tex-faq. Note that many TeX packages have installation routines that do all or most of the work for you.
