New document, beamer document type
Create a math inset
Type "\boldsymbol<space>V"
Export to tex and check that lyx has inserted:
%% Bold symbol macro for standard LaTeX users
\newcommand{\boldsymbol}[1]{\mbox{\boldmath $#1$}}
(This command is provided by the amssymb package and so lyx does not
generate it if it knows that this package is being used.)
