Yes. PNG is a bitmap graphic format, so images saved as PNG do not scale well. EPS is a vector graphic format although it can also 'wrap' bitmap images. If you're using vector graphics (eg, using some drawing package to create graphs) then stick with a vector format. The latex compiler will accept only EPS format images. The pdflatex compiler will accept PNG and PDF images.
