On my system /usr/local/TeX/texmf/doc/bibtex/btxdoc.dvi pp 7-9. The bibtex mode of (x)emacs loads a template for each new entry type where this is reflected by making OPTional the optional fields. AFAIR, tkbibtex gives indications as well. Personally, I avoid crossrefs and abbreviations to keep individual records portable. -- Jean-Pierre
