Two unrelated questions. first, when i put an abbreviation in the middle
of a sentence (ie, Mr.) lyx counts it as the end of a sentence, and puts
two spaces after it. Oops. how do i tell it to only put one space?

and here's another easy one. I have a stock copy of lyx from the debian
unstable deb. it works well enough (pretty stream-lined, maybe too much,
if you ask me) but when i emphasise a passage, nothing happens when i
export or view. no italics, or bold, or whatever. am i missing a package
here?

OK. Thanks a million for any help on either question.
