Is Acrobat Reader *closed* when you try this? The message you quoted will routinely occur if you attempt to View->PDF(pdflatex) or View->PDF (dvipdfm). Piping stuff in Windows is a major adventure (frequently with an unhappy ending), and this seems to be a case in point. If View->PDF (pdflatex) has to open Reader, it should work. Go figure.
