Hi... I have a few questions related to spacing:

1. What does "one blank line" correspond to in terms of pt, sp, in, cm, ex, em or any of the other options that Latex/LyX provides? (I'm guessing this mapping will be different for different default font sizes..) I looked at article.cls and some of the spacing is defined in ex and some in em and the numbers (such as 3.25ex, .2ex etc.) which leads me to the assumption that there must be some mapping between a blank line and one of these defined somewhere? I found a mapping amongst these units though... also see that in setspace.sty, one-half line spacing corresponds to 1.25, but can't seem to find the unit for 1.25...

2. For the default spacing that LyX/Latex uses for the following (assuming article class):
- above a section heading, subsection heading or abstract heading,
- between any of these headings and the text corresponding to the section/subsection/abstract,
I see entries (in article.cls) such as: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
{-3.5ex [EMAIL PROTECTED] -1ex [EMAIL PROTECTED] -.2ex}%
{2.3ex [EMAIL PROTECTED]
{\normalfont\Large\bfseries}}
... what do the various ex spacings in this command correspond to? I assume that if I know the answer to 1 and the current question, I should be able to renewcommand any section/subsection I want and specify the appropriate spacing I need...

3. What's the easiest way to change any/all of the spacings in 2? Would it be using renewcommands similar to the newcommand above? Or, is there a package that allows easy redefinition of the spacings in 2?

4. Is there any proposal to include specification of such spacings using a GUI in Layout->Document? Reason I ask is I've seen such questions on spacing come up frequently on this list and several conferences/journals have specific requirements on some/all of these spacings.

Sorry for the long email...

Thanks,
nirmal
