I then ran src/lyx as rboland sucessfully except that in math mode mathematical
symbols are not displayed properly. They do print properly though.
In redhat I had to install a fonts file which was a .rpm file to get this to work.
You probably need to install latex-xft-fonts for the math to show up.. you can find the non-rpm version at:
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/
I believe there are install instructions in the archive..
