This works nice for often used symbols or the ones with (almost) non-ambiguous names (\alpha...\omega, but not \varphi) Another point is, that sometimes the keybord-shortcuts (or math-panel) offer enhanced functionality (like marking some stuff and pressing M-m ( to get a pair of () around or M-m f for a fraction with the stuff in the numerator. Pressing \frac would replace the selection instead of puttin it in the frac.)
