Since when is Elsevier in Poland (platex in tex/platex is a clone of TeX for Poles)? BTW, you can certainly throw both .cls and .sty file to the same directory (you will find easier). Moreover, it is probably better to put these files into /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/elsevier (if this directory doesn't exist create it with mkdir -p) -- then you will remember that these files which you downloaded from somewhere else than with your distribution and you can be sure, that these won't be wiped out with the next update of TeTeX (OK, they _should_ survive update, but there are so many broken packages around).
