It does identify and correct a lot of the words for me (It is not comprehensive but is still good enough). Spellchecker starts checking from where your cursor is. So maybe that is the reason. Try putting the cursor at the beginning and check. Maybe that will help.

I had installed the lyx_aspell_dict_en.rar file in Ruurd's directory. It didn't have all the files you had mentioned.
