Just curious -- which particular document classes/packages you want? Is there LyX support for them? What does kpsewhich <nameofpackage.sty> or kpsewhich <nameofclass.cls> say?
What I actually want is currvita; but since there are some small complications related to installing that package I used a more straightforward example in my question so as not to confuse the issue.
I don't know how I would find out if there is LyX support for a package. This begins to look like a prime suspect in the problem I'm having. Is this something that I should be able to gain insight into from the docs?
in the case of currvita, kpsewhich currvita.sty says
/sw/share/texmf-local/tex/latex/currvita/currvita.sty
But from the /misc/ directory, which I mentioned in my question, I'm interested in a package called block. kpsewhich block.sty says
/sw/share/texmf-local/tex/latex/misc/block.sty
