Try putting "{\ae}" or "\ae{}" in ERT. Thus, if you want "AEsop's fables" you'd type "\AE{}" in ERT, followed immediately by "sop's fables" in the normal paragraph. Without the "{}", when LyX converts to LaTeX for compiling it produces "\AEsop's" which gives the undefined control sequence. With the "{}" it produces "\AE{}sop's" which LaTeX can properly interpret.

How do you know this? The error box tells you that "\AEsop" is the undefined control sequence. ...

I want to use the ligature '\ae' at the beginning of a word. However, when
I add it using the ERT button, I get an error message about an "undefined

What do I read to learn what I've done incorrectly?

Thanks,
