I suspect that your document class does not define \newblock or that the definition gets lost. So: - What document class are you using? - Does the error also occur if you use a standard class? - is there a newblock definition in your class? - what happens if you add \def\newblock{\hskip .11em plus.33em minus.07em} to the preamble?
