Vaclav Thanks for having a look at this, I'm not an expert at either lyx or the elsevier class.
I've just done a check, and I'm not sure I see what you mean. Latexing the outputted tex file, and either including the extra newlines or not seems to lead to the same result. BTW, I'm trying to reproduce the out as in the first example of the Elsevier instructions. The second example uses a different format. I've attached the tex output, with a space between the first two authors, and one betweent the second and last. The spacing in the dvi seems the same.
