Character styles are like environments for small segments of text, not whole paragraphs. Character styles are named entities defining the typeface, weight, slant, sub/superscript, color, letter spacing, and other attributes of letters. The idea is that if I have a character style called "celebrity" that I use for names of famous people (Linus Torvalds, Larry Wall, etc), I can put all famous people in that character style, and they'll all look the same. Later I might decide to change the look of famous people's names, so I'd change the definition of the style, rather than searching the document for every famous person and changing each one.
