Thanks - that's a lot clearer, and I see that I was indeed missing something (the idea that a figure or table in a float had properties just like a paragraph). My instincy was that figures or tables ought to be centred by default, but I can see why the Lyx developers (and some publishers!) might choose to give the same defaults as other paragraphs. However, the procedure is not quite as you describe: you should modify it to: 2. type your caption in Figure: ------ then put the cursor in the first sentence of caption (that what I did) 2a. Hit return 3. insert->graphics otherwise the graphics appear on the same line as the caption, and one gets an error message when trying to compile. I've verified this on Lyx 1.3 and 1.2.2 (I was able to try the latter from a Knoppix CD I had lying around - another jewel in the crown of Open Source software).
