I have experienced something similar, in my case the toolbar buttons displayed a weird symbol as well. To fix my problem, I deleted everything, including cygwin, and started fresh. It appeared to just be a bad install. This has happened a couple of times. Recommendation, reinstall and follow install instructions to the letter. Well except perhaps that bit about tetex ;) Rob
