Thanks Dekel. No explicit format works fine. regarding pdflatex - habit. When I last looked I liked the fonts better than pdf export. And worked with xpdf [pre]viewing. (pdf export had the same issue as pdflatex file types BTW.) I guess with better font support in xpdf2.0 that may no longer be an issue. Must look again. john
