Ive fixed it............. I think
I commented out
%BSTINPUTS = .;/usr/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/harvard/{bst,}//
from /usr/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf
and it seems to work now
The harvard system does not work but I can sort that out later (I hope)
any ideas on why the above line stuffed things up would be appreciated. I still dont know why every thing was working ok then wasnt working at all but still.
