How did you generated the PDF ? Which font did you use ?
What does 'pdffonts file.pdf' outputs ?

One possible problem can be if you used the Times font which was not embedded
in the PDF file. The solution, assuming you use ps2pdf (namely the menu item
export->PDF in LyX), is to use ps2pdf13 instead.
You can make LyX do that using the preferences dialog: change the ps->pdf
from ps2pdf to ps2pdf13.
