Thanks all for the suggestions on this one.
The issue was the environment variables the user had set in .cshrc.
Keep in mind this is a linux box:
#setenv TEXFONTS ".:/usr/freeware/texmf/fonts//"
#setenv TEXINPUTS ".:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/base//"
#setenv TEXPOOL ".:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex.pool"
#setenv TEXFONTS_SUBDIR ".:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/fonts//"
#setenv TEXINPUTS_SUBDIR ".:/usr/local/tex/inputs//"
#setenv PKFONTS ".:/usr/local/tex/fonts/pk//"
#setenv XDVIFONTS ".:/usr/local/tex/fonts/%p"
I commented them out and all is well.
Thanks,

I am using lyx version 1.2.1 on linux 2.4.9-31
When I am root, I can use the drop down menus to view .lyx documents
as pdf and .ps formats. If I am any other user, including myself, I
get an error that says " An error has occured, you should fix it "
I love those helpful error messages!
What do I need to set so all users can view their .lyx documents as
.pdf or .ps?
Do you have the same problem with exporting? Is it just with PS/PDF, or
do you also get an error when exporting as LaTeX? In the former case
I'd suggest checking permissions on ghostscript, in the latter, ditto
for latex.
Just a guess ...
