Debian already has packages, though only for 1.1.6fixsomething,
at the moment.

I don't run debian, but isn't there some sort of "alien" program
which can turn an RPM into a .deb?

There might be a good chance to create deb packages form tar.gz by using checkinstall. I did it serveral times and it worked.
I don't know if these packages are really GNU/Linux compatible, at least I can report good experiences by creating RPMs which work well for RH7.2!
