Wonderful idea... but just try it out: it's already there! at least it works
for me: M-enter preserves the environment type and the nesting depth.
Well, I've learnt two lessons from this:
1. Always have LyX open when reading the LyX list!
2. Have a look at the bind files and write myself a cheat-sheet
(I did that once, but that was in the days when I was using KLyX).
