The IEEEtran.cls file is usually not installed by default. You can get it from http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/ieeetran.html > so I use the linuxdoc_article template, but if I put in figure floats, or > table floats, they simple disappear from the final output. Linuxdoc does not supports float. Don't use it unless you really need to use it. Use the standard article layout instead.
