That translates to \begin{multline}$...$\end{multline} and LaTeX's choking is to be expected.. What about Type \begin{multline}1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4\end{multline} Mark it, Press C-m? [I know, this should be documented somewhere. In 1.3 it's at least accessible through Insert->Math->AMS multline.
