Bill, Another option is to install the lyx deb from http://packages.debian.org/testing/text/lyx.html. Yes, it is in the testing version of debian, but there is nothing wrong with it (testing is almost the new stable debian now). However, you might have to upgrade a bunch of other stuff, and you may not want to do that.
