I don't know about 1.1.6 (haven't any on my new box here), but in 1.2.0pre*
you can put the cursor in fornt of the underlined item and press
'backspace' to remove the \underbar.

I think this won't happen as it wouldn't be possible to input things like
double underbars etc anymore (and means extra code for that matter)
