Hi Allan Marvin, ... (please add your name here ;-)

My I add my 2 cents ?

Yes the letter.cls may be really annoying, because of the imposed order of
the input commands. There was 2 distinct problems related in this thread :
        - adjustement of the letter fields in the (dvi, postcript) output :
either you find/wait for a new letter class (for french letter style, have
a look at lettre.cls from D. Megevand, Observatoire de Genève), or you
have to use latex code (e.g. minipages, boxes for sender/address fields).
There is nothing LyX can do for you (?), except distributing the layout or
template files you wrote ;-).

        - by-passing the imposed order of fields in the class, and thus
getting a somewhat WYSIWIG display and corrext html output : Now LyX
already gave you the tools to do that, by use of the layout file which
makes a distinction between the LyX's layouts and the related Latex
commands or environment. The idea is to define new latex command for the
different fields, and then reorder everything as expected by the latex
class. I started this kind of work on a personnal "lettre.layout" (for the
package mentionned above, not for letter.cls, sorry) file, which should be
somewhere in the mailing list archive. I know that somebody already
improved this layout, but I didn't notice any pointer to the resulting
layout (this doesn't mean that it was not made available :-) ).
