But it doesn't seem the problem is with gsview. You are talking about the little red error boxes? Click on the boxes to get a popup telling you more about the error. Sometimes it is because you haven't loaded the right packages, sometimes you might have left off a brace in a preamble command. In any case, the popup will at least tell you where the error occurred, so you can go fix it.
If this is happening with the LyX examples and such, which -should- work, then are you sure you have a complete TeX/LaTeX distro installed?
