this is a known problem (I'm not sure if the workaround made it into the docs).
Basically kdvi in KDE2 doesn't support the -paper option (this is a kdvi bug).
You can work around this by entering in ~/.lyx/preferences :
\view_dvi_paper_option ""
Of course this will mean kdvi can use the wrong paper type. If you don't like that,
complain to the KDE team ;)
