The original "LaTeX: A Document Preparation System" by Leslie Lamport
is the way to go.  Yes, there is a lot of stuff on the web, but for a
real thorough and clear reference, this is The Book.

Then get the LaTeX companion if you can.

All the documentation on the web assumes that you already have both
these books.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a copy of the LaTeX companion anywhere.  I
didn't really want to have to buy it online from overseas if I could get
it locally.  (sigh)
