Did you try a document without this \ensuremath? Here it does not
work. This is probably related to the following in latin1.def:
\providecommand{\mathordfeminine}{{^a}}
[and later]
\DeclareInputMath{170}{\mathordfeminine}
Now, don't ask me why it is so...
