If you put the definition code into the preamble (rather than before the table, as I have done), you can nest them in a preview environment to see the result. Or, more elegantly, you could define a counter in LyX as documented in Help > Customization (5.3.12) and use that directly (as documented in the User Guide, sec. 6.4). This requires some tweaking with LyX layout definitions (e.g., in Document > Local Layout or a module).
