Or, try the solution Herbert Voss provided me (on this mail list) when LyX reported not finding a file that was present (run as root): "try in a terminal to update the field database "texhash "Then run "kpsewhich moderncvcolors.tex (replace with the file in your situation) "it should print the current directory.
