Dear LyX Development Team,

I am sorry to send an e-mail again. I am currently using LyX on both
MacOS and Windows, with OneDrive for file synchronization between the
two systems. Since upgrading to LyX 2.4, I've noticed a significant
change in how the software handles file paths, which is causing issues
in my cross-platform setup.

In LyX 2.4, the software only supports relative paths within the
current folder. For files located in parent directories, it now uses
absolute paths instead. This is a change from LyX 2.3, which was able
to use relative paths more extensively.

This new approach in version 2.4 creates a problem because MacOS and
Windows use different formats for absolute paths. As a result, LyX
fails to locate the correct files when I switch between operating
systems. To illustrate:

On Windows, an absolute path might look like:
C:\Users\Username\Documents\file.txt
On MacOS, the same location would be: /Users/Username/Documents/file.txt

Given this difference, a file reference that works on one system fails
on the other.

Additionally, I've noticed a change in setting the BibTeX database
path. In LyX 2.3, I could directly input a relative path in the dialog
box under the local database. However, in LyX 2.4, I can only click
"add local..." and then select from the file browser, which results in
an absolute path.

These changes have significantly inconvenienced my cross-platform
workflow. I'm writing to inquire if there's a way to address this
issue or if the LyX team plans to restore more extensive relative path
support in future versions?

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing
your thoughts on this matter.

Best regards,

Chenyu Gao
