Hello Riki,
Sorry for the poor description. Each reference can be configured by Bibtex to
have an identifier number 1 ….n where each acts a link/index to a specific
reference. There is an order of increase in the numbers which corresponds in
the alphabetic order of the references . The BibTex function can generate this
but I don’t know if this is embedded in LyX . My question is if I add or remove
a reference will the Bibtex / LyX combination automatically change the
sequence of numbers ensuring each reference has a link / index number where
the numerical and alphabetic order is maintained without any gaps or out of
sequence numbers and the changes in these numbers are reflected in the LyX
generated document.
Anything being done by BibTeX will be done automatically by LyX. Any
time you generate a PDF or DVI, LyX runs a sequence of TeX commands
being the scenes. It tracks when commands need to be re-run, and so
forth. So any change to references will re-run BibTeX (or whatever
bibliography processor you've configured that document to use).

PS Keep the discussion on the list, in case others have similar
questions, or have something to contribute. Others definitely know more
than I do about bibliography stuff.
