LyX has build-in support for \mathbf:
Just press M-c b (or Ctrl+b) and type your text.
Press M-c b (or Ctrl+b) again to return to normal mode.

If you need bold greek letlets, use the bm package
(\usepackage{bm} in the preamble, and \bm{...} in the formula).
