I don't see how this one applies to my situation -- it isn't that I need
the pictures on float-pages not to be centred, it's that I don't want
the picture to be on a float page if it is only, say, 60% of the height
of the page (but I do if it is, 95% of the height of the page)

And I'm not sure how this helps either. I don't need absolute
positioning (I don't think), I just want the float not to be on a
float-page if it is bigger than 50% of the page height.
Or are you saying I should try [!htb] for this particular float?
Because that doesn't work either.
