I frequently use Insert -> Formatting -> Superscripts (or Subscripts, but just type ctrl-l and insert \textdegree because a) I don't need to move my hands from the keyboard and use the trackball, and b) I've used it many times over the past decades. When there are multiple ways of doing things all work while each of us prefers one way.
