In the LaTeX preamble, insert \usepackage{graphicx}. Then DO NOT use the
GUI figure inserting stuff, use all ERT. It's a bit of a pain, but to be
honest, I use that more than the built-in stuff, even though I am "Mr.
LyX Documentation Maintainer" (cough). The developers have been kicking
around the notion of switching to graphicx for a long time, but nothing
has been done yet as they've been focusing on deeper things. But I too
will rejoice when the default is the much-more-powerful graphicx.
