I think LyX is marketed correctly as a document creator. If you have time and are so inclined, you can create any kind or sort of document with LyX. Save the template for future use and there it is, almost magic next time. If needing anything at all, a few tweaks. Many people say they just don't have time or can't be bothered to muck about, or reinvent the wheel, trying to get some things to work with LyX. Better, easier, faster to use another program that someone else has had time to muck about with to get working. I think that's true. But most document types, which are not very extensive, that I require, can be or have been created with LyX by someone else or myself, and tweaked as needed for each purpose. Very often and graciously helped by those on this mailing list.
