There is no documentation of the LyX file format, except the source code
itself, the format is a moving target between various releases and I
believe that noone is bothering to document whatever is done.
However, the format itself is pretty simple and is completely text
based, it can be understood pretty easily from the lyx file itself with
a bit of aid from reading the relevant source code.
There is an intention to move to an XML based format, but that is going
on in a snail pace (tabulars in an XML based format, but that is all I
know).
