  Perhaps not. I've not needed to split a long word in a bibliography but
quite often have needed to give TeX a hint where to hyphenate a word that
sticks into the right margin and the hyphenation dictionary did not know how
to split it.

  If I change the wording in that sentence so the long word is no longer
hyphenated TeX ignores my suggested location. A few times, I've entered \-
in several places in a word and TeX has selected the split that best fits
the text width, and will change that if the text width changes.

  Try suggesting hyphenation places in the bibtex entry and see how the
output appears.
