Scott, I can't see your attached example (because my LyX is too old for
it). But I use \mid for inline math, when it doesn't need to "grow".

\mid (I didn't know \middle) is strange, because it grows more slowly
than the surrounding brackets.

If I want to match sizes, I do it manually, with e.g.

\Bigl( [some math] \Bigm| [more math] \Bigl)

I gather that \middle does just that, automatically.
