I thing that currently the mathed doesn't support languages that use
charcters other than 7bit ASCII.
This will hopefully be fixed soon.
In the meantime you can use \newcommand to write the text outside of mathed:
Before the formula put the following (in latex mode)
\newcommand{\txt}{\textrm{Your text}}
and in the formula put \txt.
