Short of modifying the source code, no, there's no way to customize this. But you can of course patch the source for your own purposes if you wish. The routine in question is Text::getPossibleLabel, in Text.cpp. It probably would not be that hard to add preferences to control length and what spaces get replaced with, though we're sometimes reluctant to add too many preferences....
