Dear all,
as you probably know LyX can currently be compiled with g++ 2.8.1 and
later as well as with a few proprietary compilers.
g++ 2.8.1 does not support some features that some developers would like
to use. Currently there is a discussion on lyx-devel on whether it is
sensible to drop support for compilers older than 2.95.
It looks like none of the developers are using older compilers anymore
(the last few have upgraded recently) but there might be users out there
who still use older compilers, compile LyX from the sources and do not
find it acceptable or possible to upgrade their compilers.
Just to make sure that a move to use more recent compilers does not hurt
you might take the opportunity to speak up _now_.
Moreover, it would be nice if we could get a general picture of how people
get their LyX: Whether they use pre-compiled packages or compile themselves
and if so, what compilers are used.
Andre'
PS: You may mail me directly, I'll try to collect the result and post a
summary to lyx-devel and lyx-users.
